What's the smell coming from New Jersey? It's the smell of justice!
Today was the first day that same-sex civil unions are recognized in NJ. Unfortunately, since today also happened to be a federal holiday, no civil unions were filed in Jersey City (I believe one NJ town opened its municipal doors and allowed civil unions to take place), though applications for licenses were accepted.
To commemorate this historic event, NJ and NY gay and lesbian groups organized the PATH to Equality, wherein activists and couples hoping to unionize marched together from Christopher St in NYC, rode the PATH train to Jersey City, and gathered in City Hall for the 7pm rally. Some couples, such as Alfred Burgenmeister and Jack Harvey (pictured here), filed their application for a license while the rally was in full force at the Council Chambers one floor above.

That's dangerous. You shouldn't be doing that!
That's what the programmers said to me when I busted out my camera and started taking pictures of these snipers. I just smiled at them and kept on shooting.

Surgery is done. Doc said it went beautifully. Mommy should be able to go home tomorrow. Bring food please!"
My dad and I waited a total of seven hours in the hospital. Although she ended up staying an additional 5 days, we're thankful that everything went well.
Thanks for keeping my mom in your thoughts and prayers!
What's the most drastic change you've ever made to your appearance?

OK, I had to totally dig for these photos, and then upload them to flickr just for this post.
Hi, I'd like five tickets for the Tenacious D show on December 1st.
The what show?
Tenacious D.
Tennessee versus who?
No, it's not a ball game. It's a sho, I mean, concert. Tenacious D.
Are you sure that's an event here at the Garden?
Uhh, I hope so. Otherwise I just walked 12 blocks to the wrong place.
Let me check the system for you.
December first.
Oh, here we are. Two tickets you said?
No, five tickets.
OK, we have three tickets in section...
No, five tickets.
Oh right. OK, we have five tickets in seciton four hundred thirty ...
Actually, I was checking the tickets online and kept getting section 312. I figured if I went to the box office, I'd get better seats.
OK, how about this. Section three hundred forty-one. Thirty-nine fifty each
Nothing in the two hundreds? We want the fifty-four fifty tickets.
No, not for five tickets.
OK, anything better in the three hundreds section?
Sigh. How about this. Front row seats in section three hundred thirty-one.
I'll take 'em!
My niece turned thirteen today. It's such a cliche, but it really does seem like yesterday when she was this adorable, chubby china doll that I used to prop up on chairs, tables and other inanimate objects and take countless photos of. She never complained, and always obliged her Tita Heidi.
I like to think that somehow I've been a good influence on her. When she younger, she used to say that she wanted to be Miss America. Somewhere down the line, she changed her mind and wanted to be the first female president of the USA. And now she wants to be an artist and photographer.
Today she let me photograph her again, just like old times. Except now, instead of a chubby toddler, I see a young woman.

Two weeks ago, I watched Chef Andrew (host of Bizarre Foods of Asia) and Tony Bourdain (No Reservations) eat a Southeast Asian fruit called durian on their respective shows on the Travel Channel, and I've been fiending for one since. So yesterday after dim sum in Chinatown, I scored not one, but two (one fresh, one frozen)!
Since my in-laws are in town, I offered to share my bounty, but they -- after getting a whiff of my purchases -- politely declined. Having grown up in California and Hawai'i, neither the adults nor the kids were familiar with the fruit, and were put off by the smell. Frankly, while I agree that the smell is strong, I actually think it smells pretty damn good! My dad used to bring boxes of these spikey fruits back to Manila from his business trips to central and southern Philippines. My mom unsuccessfuly tried to ban it from our home (she hated the smell), but we kids devoured them in seconds. I remember gathering with my three siblings 'round our dad was he ceremoniously sliced open the fruit and handed me (the few perks of being bunso or youngest in the familhy!) the first prize. After my dad passed the seeds around, we'd sit together quietly as we ate in absolute bliss. That's what I've always associated with (the taste and smell of) durian.
I ran into my neighbors this morning, and having mentioned the fruit to them sometime last week (yes, I have a one-track mind),
Happy happy joy joy!
